Gas for Fuel

Currently, hydrogen electrolysis is expensive in the UK and energy-intensive. Until technology advances to the point where electrolysis is economically viable, Gas can ease low-emissions hydrogen production.

The RotoReformer is extremely versatile. Having the choice to provide gas to produce hydrogen from diverse sources in the UK

Diversification of gas sources enhances reliability and flexibility in production, reducing dependency on a lone supply point.

  • The existing gas network allows us to connect to thousands of connection points in the UK for hydrogen production from the RotoReformer.
  • Anaerobic Digestion - The UK has over 750 (including sludge digestors at Waste Water Treatment Plants) operational anaerobic digestion (AD) plants, with a capacity of more than 2,800 MW of biogas for use as renewable heat, electricity or biomethane (green gas) Biogas is a renewable feedstock that can be used to produce hydrogen through the decomposition of biomethane. Biogas is a workable, sustainable, and efficient energy resource because of the plentiful supply of low-cost feedstocks
  • LNG - versatility, existing markets and infrastructure enable it to support hydrogen-related production. Using LNG as a feedstock for SMR is an established industrial process. LNG can be transported worldwide by ship, rail, or truck. This flexibility is a boon for locations lacking abundant natural gas resources, as it makes LNG available locally for producing low-carbon hydrogen through pairing with our RotoReformer. LNG’s transportability allows the hydrogen economy to scale more quickly.

The ability to produce hydrogen remotely, whether through anaerobic digestion or LNG tanker delivery, opens possibilities for locations that may not have access to robust electrical grids. This is essential for powering vehicles or industries in urban areas where traditional electricity sources may be limited or expensive.

Exploring multiple gas sources for hydrogen production paves the route for practical, resilient, adaptable, and cost-effective decarbonisation of transport and industry.
